Ebru (Paper Marbling Art) in Turkey

The most upheld traditional Turkish art in modern Turkey. The origins are mostly anonymous. The horse trails are used in order to spread the natural dyes specially made for this art type on the surface of the water. The dyes float on the surface of the water due to the chemicals that are used to change the water density. And after the colorful design is formed the paper is carefully placed on top of the water and left for the absorption of the dyes by the paper, then the paper is pulled from a side.

This art form is considerably abstract as the artist is bond by the little control he/she has over the design which involves great randomness. The artist is the one who determines the mood of the design on the tray and the final form is a product of the foresight. The outcome is never the same is never predictable. And precisely this determines the quality of the artist who can manage to pull out the most elegant ebru.
